Workshop: Virgin Galactic AME

The intent of the workshop is to train AMEs in how to become affiliated with Virgin Galactic as an AME so that they can conduct flight physicals on Virgin Galactic Customers as spaceflight commercial operations resume in 2026.  The workshop will consist of 4 morning sessions (50 minutes each with a 10-minute break interval in between sessions) from 8AM-12PM.  Attendees must attend all 4 morning sessions to complete the minimum AME training requirements.  Following an hour break for lunch, there will also be 2 afternoon sessions that are highly encouraged, but not mandatory.  The first afternoon session would run from 1-2PM and the second afternoon session would run from 2-4PM.

Session I

Introduction to the Virgin Galactic

This session provides an introduction to Virgin Galactic as a company.  Particular emphasis is given to Virgin Galactic’s mission, vision, and customer service model.

Session 2

Introduction to the Virgin Galactic Medical Journey

This session provides an overview of how the Virgin Galactic medical team screens spaceflight participants and conducts medical risk stratification.  Attendees are introduced to the standard 3 step medical journey consisting of:  1) a medical questionnaire, 2) a Virgin Galactic flight surgeon video-conference-interview, and 3) an in-person AME flight physical.  Data from these 3 sources are then used by the Virgin Galactic medical team to conduct individual medical risk stratification and to implement medical mission planning.  The remainder of the session then narrows its focus to deep-dive step 3: the AME flight physical.  The critical nature of this step is explained in detail.

Session 3

Virgin Galactic AME registration, profile creation, and legal documents

Orientation will be provided to the Virgin Galactic AME portal and electronic medical record.  Participants will be guided through initial website registration, AME profile creation, AME clinic profile creation, and public-facing AME information review.  Additionally, attendees will be familiarized with the content of required legal documents.  Tips and tricks for navigation of the website will be highlighted such as frequently asked questions (FAQs) and links to important references.

Session 4

Conducting and documenting a Virgin Galactic flight physical

Participants will be guided through a complete flight physical using the Virgin Galactic process and documentation system.  Every required data entry field will be reviewed and explained.  Emphasis will be placed on common mistakes to avoid, where to find helpful hints for all data fields, and how to communicate additional information and/or concerns to the Virgin Galactic medical team.  Timelines and deadlines for AME submission of completed exams and documentation will be explained.  Emphasis will be placed on unique aspects of the Virgin Galactic exam which differ from FAA or EASA exams; but which are critical to Virgin Galactic processes.

LUNCH HOUR
Session 5

Anthropometrics and Equipment Familiarization

This is a ‘hands on’ working session where participants will be guided through the critical anthropometric measurements required as part of a Virgin Galactic flight physical exam.  Additionally, opportunity will be provided to become familiar with equipment that spaceflight participants will interact with and need to be able to operate during spaceflight (e.g., flight suit, emergency oxygen, bone conduction headset, parachute, seat buckle, water flask, emesis bag, etc.).

Session 6

Session 6: Proctored

All participants will have the opportunity to complete each step of the AME registration process during the final workshop session with in-person oversight and assistance thereby leaving the session as fully registered and approved Virgin Galactic AMEs.
